Sculpture – The Birth Series
The driftwood incorporated in my pieces is indigenous to Short Beach, CT, where I live. Each piece of wood has had a life of its own and gone through incredible changes, similar to all of our lives. The tree was once vibrant with life and growing. It goes through a metamorphosis at the end of its life and falls into the sea. It is nurtured and formed into something no longer living, but beautiful. It floats to an island where I find it. Others burned some of the pieces over a beach fire to give brilliant light and warmth but the wood doesn’t cremate completely and is still durable enough to hold something dear. By adorning this driftwood with pearls, hand cast sterling elements, copper and other symbolic found objects, I have helped to create a new phase of its life. It is re-born as a symbol of birth and can be immortalized as art.
